Blue Mountains Cottages Accommodation - a fairytale visit to this extraordinary region of New South Wales in Australia.

The Blue Mountains - a large area of the Great Dividing Range - sits 50 km or 30 miles west of Sydney. The highest point is 1,215 meters or 3,986 feet - this is high country but not exactly mountainous. There are ancient sandstone valleys, vast eucalypt forests, untouched rivers, waterfalls, fern-filled caverns and rocky outcrops. Thousands of miles of wilderness and mountain villages dotted across the old railway line, which is now shadowed by the Great Western Highway.

The hues are indeed blue. This remarkable feature of this spectacular gorge country is explained as oil droplets in the air from the forests of eucalyptus - gum trees - in the ravines and along the rocky hillsides.
There are plenty of reasons to visit the Blue Mountains and my favourites are below.

Hiking in the Blue Mountains National Park
A huge area of 2,960 square metres, the park ranges from the Jamison Valley to Grand Canyon, including four rivers, sandstone ravines, ferny gullies and rocky outcrops like the iconic 'Three Sisters' and is part of the Greater Blue Mountains Heritage Area, protected by the UN. With over 110 hiking tracks, you have your choice of bush walks short and long, mild and challenging. This is steep ravine county. Be safe. Never leave the track.

Discover Cafes, Art, Crafts and Timeless Views in Leura
Leura Mall is a must! Browse quirky local crafts, find treasures, discover cafes, meet friends, then stroll to the edge of the valley to look at one of those breathtaking views. Stylish, historic and simply stunning. The shops along Leura Mall date from the 1900's-1920's, and it has been fashionable to visit Leura since the station opened here in 1891. Keep walking down the mall towards the Jamison Valley to see historic cottages, autumn trees and English gardens. Cafes change, restaurants change, but the view from Olympian Rock is timeless.

Bush Walking & Coffee - the Conservation Hut at Wentworth Falls
This is the place to start your journey in the Blue Mountains at the National Park Visitors Centre. A meeting place for conservationists became a cafe in 1993, and it sits within the national park with expansive views over the Jamison Valley to Mount Solitary. Enjoy a bush walk to Empress Falls. Take care in high places and never leave the track. Fresh air, the earthy smell of the Australian bush, wide open spaces and good coffee, one of my favourite combinations.
Blue Mountains Cottages Accommodation - mining began in the 1870's, the railway opened things up in 1868. As Sydney grew, the mountain hamlets became havens for artists, and settlements grew from the 1900's. In 1912, Norman Lindsey, an artist, cartoonist and writer established somewhat of a trend with his wife Rose at 'Springwood' in Faulconbridge. A healthy art scene has been a vibrant part of mountain life ever since. Small cottages were part of this, being built initially for miners' accommodation then later as second homes. Victorian era cottages have gabled roofs, verandahs, dormer windows, fireplaces and English style gardens. Keep a look out for authentic cottages and for their ideal location close to hiking trails.
