Cosy Hobbit House - where would you expect to find a Hobbit's home? Under the ground, under the hill, in the Shire, of course! On an earth bank, in a hillside, snuggled into the earth. Hobbit homes are comfortable, full of the good things in life; books, fireplaces, larders full of food, wooden furniture and home-loving Hobbits. There is no doubt you could get a warm welcome and a good cup of tea in a Hobbit house.
JRR Tolkein wrote 'The Hobbit' for children, in 1937, and went on to write 'The Lord of the Rings', in 1954, based in 'Middle Earth', the world he had created in his first novel. Tolkein was an English writer, a linguist and scholar, focused on the folk history of England. He grew up in Wales and lived in Oxfordshire, which are farming regions full of rolling green hills, small villages and abundant farms. I have no doubt that this is the background for 'The Shire' of his imagination.
Folk tales of small 'halflings' that disappear quickly, light on their feet, with an affinity with the earth and its creatures, were common in British heritage. As were stories of faeries, dwarfs, goblins and elves. All of these rolled together beautifully to create the cultures of Middle Earth. I loved these stories as a child and continue to enjoy them as an adult. They light up my imagination.
Cosy Hobbit House - in 2001, a film of 'The Lord of the Rings' was released. This film had been made primarily in New Zealand, with that country's magnificent landscapes contributing as The Shire, and many other locations in Middle Earth. The little spot that was made into Hobbiton, the home of Frodo and Bilbo Baggins, was actually on a sheep farm, in Waikato in the North Island. The choice of location was very much dependent upon the magnificent tree which could represent the 'Party Tree'. Luckily for all of us, the team found the most magnificent valley and created the cosiest, most inviting and charming village which, after a few years and some more movies of 'The Hobbit', was left to become a wonderful permanent representation of a Hobbit village. Every detail is so beautifully presented. But sadly, no, you cannot stay here.
You can visit Hobbiton village near Matamata. Visit the 'Party Tree' and the 'Green
Dragon Inn'. See the beautiful bucolic Hobbit village up close. Visit
the movie set, as a beautiful calm village. Visit with a guide for the set
tour, add second breakfast, or lunch, or a banquet. Drink the exclusive
Southfarthing ale at the Green Dragon Inn. A must for lovers of the
Middle Earth world.
So, if you haven't read 'The Hobbit' by JRR Tolkein, here is how it starts...
“In a hole in the
ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends
of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it
to sit down on or to eat: it was a Hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”

'A day in the Shire! We were very impressed with the extent of the site, the perfection of the sense you were among Hobbits, and the attention to fine detail in the gardens, Hobbit holes, pond and general topography. The walk through of a dwelling left no doubt the residents had just stopped out for elevensies and would soon return. Informative guide, moved along but we didn't feel rushed at all. Having her stand us to a pint of ale at the Green Dragon Inn was an unexpected delight. Highly recommended for anyone familiar with Tolkien.'
