The Hansel and Gretel Fairy Tale

Hansel & Gretel Fairytale Cover

The Hansel and Gretel Tale - ‘Hänsel and Gretel’ was published by the Brothers Grimm in Germany in 1812. However, it is a mixture of many different European folk tales and it goes something like this.

Once upon a time, a brother and sister are abandoned in the forest by their parents due to lack of food. They get lost in the forest, then they find a gingerbread house, made of bread walls, cake roof and sugar windows. But the cottage belongs to a nasty witch. The witch captures Hansel and Gretel, planning to fatten Hansel up to eat him. The children outwit the witch and escape, eventually getting back to their home and live happily ever after.

The ginger part of the gingerbread house came later in history, as another embellishment of the story, in line with the delicious lebkuchenhausen gingerbread houses popular in Germany

The tale is similar to ‘Finette Cendron’ or 'Cunning Cinders' from France and ‘Vasilisa the Beautiful’ from Russia. It includes many archetypes of good and bad, temptations and moral lessons for both adults and children.

What does the gingerbread house represent in Hansel and Gretel?

A tempting but ultimately destructive trap, a common theme in fairy tales and folk tales.

What is the message of Hansel and Gretel?

The story touches upon themes of abandonment, hunger, and the potential for exploitation, reflecting real fears and anxieties of the time, and shows the values of teamwork and resourcefulness, the sibling bond, not trusting strangers and never giving up hope.

Gingerbread House of Biscuits

Hansel and Gretel Cottage - although the fairytale contains dark elements, the ornate edible cottage has captured hearts and imaginations for centuries, making 'Hansel & Gretel' or the names 'Hansel' and 'Gretel' very popular names for cottages the world over. It remains a symbol of cosiness, nurture and abundance.

Where to Visit a Hansel and Gretel Cottage

    Hansel Cottage Carmel USA
    Gretel cottage Carmel USA
    Obers House Carmel USA

Hansel and Gretel Cottage - Carmel-by-the-Sea, California USA

This small seaside town is situated 130 miles or 190 km from San Francisco. It is located 4 miles or 6.5 km south of Monterey overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Enchanting cottages meet stunning coastline in this artist colony-turned-boutique retreat.

Hugh Comstock built several delightful 'storybook cottages' in Carmel-by-the-Sea in the 1920's. These were passion projects by the builder and toymaker for his dollmaker wife. Over the years, they have become famous, but most are private homes and their residents need to be respected. If you go to Carmel, keep this in mind.

You may be able to see his first cottage 'Hansel' built in 1924 and his second cottage 'Gretel' built in 1925. You will see the 'Obers House' built as their own home in 1925, and many others.

Don't worry, I have a dedicated page about Carmel-by-the-Sea and these inspired fairytale cottages. I have found plenty of delightful cottages for you to rent for a magical visit.

Hansel and Gretel Heim in Obergammergau

Hansel and Gretel House - Oberammergau  - Baviera - Germany

In Oberammergau is building known as 'Hänsel und Gretel Heim' with detailed murals called lüftlmalerei. They depict the fairytale in dramatic detail and don't hold back on gruesome details. The black cat is included!

The town is home to many delightful artworks in the mural art that is native to villages and towns of southern Germany and Austria, especially in Upper Bavaria and in the Tyrol. The art is a popular, folk-oriented variation of trompe-l'œil from the Baroque and imitates architectural elements. A must for fairytale lovers.
