Hocus Pocus Cottage

Hocus Pocus Cottage - made for the movie only

Witch cottage icon

Hocus Pocus Cottage - on the trail of witches and their magic. Incantations, trances, spells and wishes, herb lore, wisdom and mumbo jumbo. A light-hearted look at movie witches and a bit of history in Salem, Massachusetts, USA, and in Lancaster, UK. Abracadabra!

Where is the cottage from Hocus Pocus?

The cottage was made in 2022 for the release of Hocus Pocus 2 in Danvers, Massachusetts. Complete with cobwebs, waiting for the Sanderson sisters to return and mayhem to ensue. But this was only a one-time offering in association with the release of the movie and it is no longer setup.

Were the Sanderson Sisters real?

No, the Sanderson sisters are fictional characters, there were not sisters named Mary, Sarah and Winifred executed as witches in Salem. There were, however, three sisters accused of witchcraft during the witch trials.

Is the Hocus Pocus house still there?

No, but you can visit the Ropes Mansion in Salem which was Allison's house in the movie. You can also visit Max and Dani's house, the Old Town Hall, Salem Commons, Thackery Binck's House at Salem Pioneer Village and the historic cemetery dating from 1638. Respect people's privacy at private homes please.

Hocus Pocus Cottage - Witches' Homes in the Movies

The Hocus Pocus Cottage
is a house for three witches made famous by the movie Hocus Pocus. Unfortunately this cottage is not available, but there are plenty of spooky witchy cottages to enjoy. The cottage was located in Salem, Massachusetts, where there is a history of witches, and lots more history, and plenty of cottages too.

A visit to Salem is on the list for witch cottage lovers, and the history of witch trials, hauntings and the history of the movies can be enjoyed on tours around town.

Monica Bellucci as the Mirror Queen

Of course there have been many, many great witches over the years. My favourite must be Monica Bellucci, there, I said it.

Brothers Grimm - 2005 - starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger (RIP)

Monica Bellucci plays the Mirror Queen, stunning and hypnotic.

Explore Salem for Witch History

Hocus Pocus Cottage - the fictional cottage was located in Danvers, Massachusetts, but the movie was located in Salem. It is roughly based on the true history of the region. Settled in 1626 by the British, the area became a conservative, patriarchal restrictive Puritan region. In 1692-3 there was a frenzy of anti-witch sentiment and trials and hangings of women. This has been described as religious extremism, paranoia and social tension leading to intolerance, injustice, and the misuse of power. Below I will cover the Pendle Witch Trials in Britain in 1612.

The only structure still standing in Salem that has a direct connection to the witchcraft trials and is open to the public is the Witch House, on the corner of Essex and North Streets. This house, built in approx. 1675, was the home of witch trials Judge Jonathan Corwin in 1692.

'A lovely trip in a lovely home. Absolutely loved our stay in this Salem house by the water. Not only is it a beautiful home with tons of natural light by the water but the host made us feel welcomed from the moment we walked in. The Widows Walk Cottage Marblehead

The Widow's Walk Cottage - Marblehead - Massachusetts - USA

This 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom home suits 10 guests and is setup for an awesome visit. Situated in a peaceful neighbourhood near the  sea, just a few miles from Salem but away from the hubbub of town.

'We loved the turret on the house. It gave a great view of the area. We didn't use the bikes but enjoyed the hot tub. The fold-out couch upstairs was surprisingly comfortable. It was still a little chilly as it was spring, and the furnace warmed the house up quickly which we appreciated. When considering some of the places we visited, the house is out of the way, but we liked that too because we got the feel of a peaceful neighborhood that overlooked the the bay instead of the hustle and bustle of a downtown hotel. We love the New England architecture of the houses as we drove to and from our place.'

Witch Hocus Pocus Cottage - Whidbey Island

Coupeville Whidbey Island WA

Whidbey Island sits off the coast of Washington, settled in 1840 at Coupeville, it has an extensive history of indigenous habitation and no history of witches, but let's not let that spoil a good story.

Wander down Front Street in Coupeville as see the beautifully preserved historic buildings, including the shop included as 'Verbena Botanicals' in 'Practical Magic' (which is now a Mexican restaurant). Stop by the 'Crows Roost' to see if there are any witchy gifts, their motto is 'gifts-art-joy' so I think this could be a lucky spot. This island is part of the beautiful 'Island County' off the coast of Washington and only 93 km or 58 miles from Seattle. The journey from Seattle via Ferry from Port Townsend in less than 2 hours.

Here are some haunted or haven accommodations for you to relax and enjoy the island.

Anchorage Inn B&B

Anchorage Inn B&B - Whidbey Island - Washington - USA

Located just one block from Penn Cove waterfront, Coupeville Wharf and the Front Street shops, this character-filled building puts you right in the middle of this delightful town within a historic reserve. Be welcomed warmly with plenty of local knowledge. Looks like a possibility for haunted, but perhaps more like a haven.

'Very cordial inn keepers who made me feel very welcome. Beautiful, spotless inn with fantastic views of Mt. Baker over Penn Cove. Easy short walk to shops. Excellent breakfast with sweet local berries as a highlight. I absolutely loved being able to see the water from the Inn.'

Captain Whidbey Inn
Black Cat Icon

Captain Whidbey Inn - Whidbey Island - Washington - USA

This 1907 building looks a little spooky, but its location right on the waterside of Penn Cove near the State Park makes up for this, as does the friendly service. Must be a haven.

'Unforgettable stay in a beautiful historic setting. This is an amazing historical hotel in the most charming location. The restaurant is excellent and the setting is unforgettable. Parts of the hotel, especially in the lodge, are rustic, so it's only a good choice for travelers who experience an amazing locale and historic environment over all modern comforts. The staff is personable and goes the extra mile for guests.'

Marrowstone Cottage

Marrowstone Cottage - Marrowstone Island - Washington - USA

Drive to Marrowstone Island from Seattle without a ferry ride. Then down a country track to this sweet private cottage. 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and heavenly peace and quiet. Relax on the porch. Possibility of witches flying off the roof? Perhaps more of a haven. No harm done. Hike, kayak, beach-comb, bike or explore nature with water birds, eagles, otters and seals. 2 hour drive, 173 km or 100 miles.

'Super-cute cabin and friendly hosts. Great stay a little off the beaten path. Peaceful and beautiful location and cabin.'

The Lancaster Witches Walk

Lancaster Witches Walk Map

Witch Hocus Pocus Cottage
- in 1612 there were trials against those considered witches in Lancaster in England, against a backdrop of political change where Roman Catholic beliefs were out of fashion. The wild lawless area of Pendle Forest was considered to be an area where witches and Catholics could be found. The Protestant anti-witch King James 1 ordered them to be found and hanged. 10 people were hanged. In 2012, 400 years after the trials, the Lancaster Witches Walk was opened.

Boots Icon

The Lancaster Witches Walk is 82 km or 51 miles and recreates the walk made from Barrowford through Pendle Forest to Lancaster castle, the most likely path of the condemned witches. This covers some lovely forests, where 10 way markers have been laid to commemorate the 10 hanged of witchery, citing verses of a poem 'The Lancashire Witches.'

It has been suggested that those accused were living as traditional healers, using herbs, charms and talismans, and may have been seen to be using sorcery. Here are some witchy and not so witchy cottages for you to visit while you walk the trail and explore the forest and the history of the area. Just don't get slain or burned. Watch out for accusers. Stay safe.
