The archipelago is known as 'skärgården' by the locals. It is vast. Choose your island carefully and check the ferry services. Ensure you have a good mix of privacy and connectivity. You can hike or rent a bike on most major islands.

These magnificent herbivores are very common and are large, growing up to 2.1 metres at the shoulder, weighing up to 850 kg. So they can do a bit of damage to your average hire car. Keep vigilant on the roads. Birds are everywhere in the archipelago, especially water birds such as the stunning Eider Duck. In summer keep an eye out for the one of the most beloved Swedish flowers - the delicate Twinflower on slender stalks.
