New Zealand South Island Hobbit Journey - staying at whimsical, dreamy Hobbity cottages and exploring the beauty of Middle Earth.

New Zealand South Island Hobbit Journey - your very own personalised journey plan awaits.

Start and end in Wellington or Christchurch, visit and stay in different charming cottages. Live the dream of a cosy, comfortable, whimsical,
Hobbity journey in New Zealand.
Set off on your adventure with these tips, a map and your handkerchief.
No nasty smelly wormy holes. No murky woods with tainted water, no trolls to battle with. Just
comfort and warm fires, warm welcomes and snuggly homes.
New Zealand South Island Hobbit Journey
Option One
Begin in Wellington, cross the Marlborough Sounds by ferry, and follow the journey anti-clockwise around the South Island before returning to Picton and sailing back to Wellington. This option gives you a chance to see more movie location spots and visit Weta Workshop, as well as enjoying one of the most beautiful ferry rides in the world.
Option Two
Begin in Christchurch and follow the journey anti-clockwise around the South Island, making your way north to Picton and Motueka first, returning to Christchurch at the end of the adventure.
Not every magical place needs a movie connection. Along the way, make time for three South Island treasures that deserve a place in any dream journey: Abel Tasman, Milford Sound and Akaroa.

Abel Tasman National Park - golden beaches, clear blue waters and lush native bush make Abel Tasman one of the South Island’s loveliest coastal escapes. Walk a stretch of the famous Coast Track, explore sheltered bays by kayak or simply take a water taxi into this beautiful corner of New Zealand. You will be staying near here at Motueka.

Milford Sound - an essential part of any South Island journey. Deep within Fiordland, sheer mountains rise from dark waters and waterfalls tumble down immense cliffs. The spectacular road into Milford is part of the adventure, and take to the water to reveal the full magic of this extraordinary landscape. Visit from Queenstown or Glenorchy, which are on your route map.

Akaroa - I fell hard for this little village, with its wooden cottages, cosy farms and deep-blue bay. The French influence adds to Akaroa’s unmistakable charm, making it one of my favourite recommendations for a South Island journey. C'est vraiment un beau village, n'est-ce pas?
So, as you might remember, 'The Hobbit' by JRR Tolkien, starts like this...
“In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a Hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
Here you’ll find no holes in the ground nor earth-covered homes, but plenty of comfort just the same, close to extraordinary Middle-earth filming locations for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Stay in these dream locations along the way.
