North Pennines Hobbit Journey - explore this quiet, upland corner of England, where adventure awaits around every bend. Discover charming cottages for rest and comfort along the way.
A Hobbit Journey Through the North Pennines and Borderlands - unlike England's better-known storybook destinations, this quiet corner of the country reveals its charms slowly. Ancient market towns, winding rivers, high moorland roads and hidden valleys create a landscape made for wandering. For travellers seeking a quieter journey beyond the Shire, it offers a rewarding adventure.

North Pennines Hobbit Journey - one of the most remote and unspoilt places in England, this National Landscape and UNESCO Global Geopark lies between the National Parks of the Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland, with the Eden Valley to the west and the winding River Tyne to the north.
What if Bilbo Baggins
had wandered beyond the Shire and discovered the North Pennines? This circular
journey explores one of England's most enchanting corners, where narrow country
lanes connect market towns, ancient landscapes and cosy cottages. Along the
way, you'll find sweeping moorland views, historic sites, dark star-filled
skies and plenty of opportunities to slow down and enjoy the adventure.

Beginning in Middleton-in-Teesdale,
the route travels north to Whittonstall, west to Haltwhistle near
Hadrian's Wall, south through Alston, England's highest market town, and
on to Appleby-in-Westmorland before returning to Middleton-in-Teesdale.
Together, these charming destinations create a scenic loop through the North
Pennines and Borderlands, linking charming villages, dramatic upland scenery
and some of the most beautiful countryside in northern England.

Walk the Pennine Way - if you'd like to experience the North Pennines on foot, follow a section of the famous Pennine Way. The trail passes through heather-covered moorland, past waterfalls and through traditional stone villages, giving you a real sense of the wild beauty that defines this region. This itinerary gives you plenty of choices to stay close to the hiking trail. Don't forget your handkerchief.

Discover Cauldron Snout - follow part of the Pennine Way to reach Cauldron Snout, one of England's longest waterfalls. Its wonderfully named series of cascades tumbles through a remote landscape of open moorland and ancient rock formations, creating a setting that feels far removed from modern life. For visitors who enjoy wild scenery and a sense of adventure, it is one of the North Pennines' most memorable natural landmarks. Just don't let Samwise fall in, as he cannot swim!

Stargaze Under Dark Skies - after sunset, look up. The North Pennines is an International Dark Sky Reserve, making it one of the best places in England to enjoy a sky full of stars. On a clear night, stargazing provides a magical end to a day of exploring. No palantíri required.

So, as you may remember 'The Hobbit' by JRR Tolkien, begins like this...
“In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a Hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.”
