Snow White Cottages
Some of the elements of the Snow White Schneewittchen story may be based in history in a town called Bad Wildungen in the Hesse region in Germany. Back in 1554 there was a beautiful countess Margaretha Von Waldeck, who fell in love with a Prince, but died mysteriously, at the young age of only 21 years, rumoured to be poisoned. Moreover, in the town of Bad Wildungen in the locale named Berg Freiheit, were small one-bedroom miners' houses, just like the one described in the fairytale.
The locals in
Berg Freiheit have restored a Snow White Cottage and opened it as a living
museum, where fairytale readings and children’s birthdays are held. Nearby
is the 11th Century Schloss Waldeck, which may stand in for the
castle in the story, where the wicked step-mother lived and from where Snow
White was banished. Schloss Friedrichstein, a gothic castle, built by Count Friedrich of Thuringia in 1200, is also associated with the fairytale.

So the story goes that a town named Lohr am Main, connects the fairy tale to 18th
Century baroness Maria Sophia von Erthal who was the daughter of
widower Philipp von Erthal, part of the nobility in Mainz, owners of the Spessart
forest and the wildlife, and who and lived in the Lohr Castle around 1720. After
his first wife died, Philipp re-married to a widow. She already had children
and didn’t like the good and kind Maria Sophia, who was ultimately forced to
flee her home and step-mother. Rumour has it that she went to live with miners
in the area, who were short like dwarfs. The Lohr Castle is now the Spessart Museum.

‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ or 'Schneewittchen' was published by the Brothers Grimm in Germany in 1812. However, it
is a mixture of many different European folk tales and it goes something like this.
Once upon a time, Snow White was a beautiful young girl banished from the castle by her jealous step-mother. She was lost in the woods but found a lovely cottage, which was the home of seven dwarfs. She lived with them, helped to cook and clean and she was safe. But the step-mother saw in a magic mirror that 'Snow White was still the most beautiful in the land', so she disguised herself as an old woman and gave Snow White a poison apple. Snow White fell into a deep sleep and the dwarfs put her into a glass coffin, but just as they carried her through the forest, a Prince came and, moved by her beauty, kissed her. She woke up and she married the Prince and they lived happily ever after.
There were many variations all across Europe and in the Celtic tradition, with different magic elements, these were similar oral stories which serve as a warning against vanity and as an encouragement to kindheartedness and love as resurrection.
In Italy one version was called 'The Cruel Stepmother' or 'La crudel matrigna'. In another Italian version the heroine was named Ermellina. In Spain the tale is similar and called 'The Beautiful Stepdaughter' or 'La hermosa hijastra'.
In Scotland, in the tale of 'Gold-Tree and Silver-Tree', the Queen asks a trout in the river who is the fairest, and receives the unwanted reply that it is her daughter.
