Hobbit House in Ireland - visit Dublin and five counties of Ireland staying at whimsical, dreamy Hobbity houses.
Hobbit House in Ireland - where would you expect to find a Hobbit's
home? Under the ground, under the hill, in the Shire, of course! On an
earth bank, in a hillside, snuggled into the earth. Hobbit homes are
comfortable, full of the good things in life; books, fireplaces, larders
full of food, wooden furniture and home-loving Hobbits. There is no
doubt you could get a warm welcome and a good cup of tea in a Hobbit
house.
JRR Tolkien wrote 'The Hobbit' for children, in
1937, and went on to write 'The Lord of the Rings', in 1954, based in
'Middle Earth', the world he had created in his first novel. Tolkien was
an English writer, a linguist and scholar, focused on the folk history
of England. He grew up in Wales and lived in Oxfordshire, which are
farming regions full of rolling green hills, small villages and abundant
farms. I have no doubt that this is the background for 'The Shire' of
his imagination.
Folk tales of small 'halflings' that disappear quickly, light on their feet, with an affinity with the earth and its creatures, were common in British heritage. As were stories of faeries, dwarfs, goblins and elves. All of these rolled together beautifully to create the cultures of Middle Earth. I loved these stories as a child and continue to enjoy them as an adult. They light up my imagination.
So, as you might remember, 'The Hobbit' by JRR Tolkien, starts like this...
“In a hole in the
ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends
of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it
to sit down on or to eat: it was a Hobbit-hole, and that means comfort."
Start and end in Dublin, visit and stay in four different underground houses. Live the dream of a cosy, comfortable, whimsical, Hobbity house in Ireland. Set off on your adventure with these tips, a map and your handkerchief. No nasty smelly wormy holes. No orcs or wargs to battle with. Just comfort and warm fires, warm welcomes and snuggly homes.
Stay in County Westmeath, just an hour's drive from Dublin Airport, for your first stop. Errigal (could it be the Lonely Mountain - Mount Erebor?) Take as many days as you like in each location below, to explore the paths and parks of Ireland, without interruption from trolls, dwarves, wizards or snooty Elvish princes.

'Relaxing and stylish retreat in the bucolic Irish Midlands. Bartholomew’s Loft in Johnsfort is absolutely lovely - the reform that the hosts have done on an old farmhouse is one of the nicest we have ever seen! They’ve managed the rare feat of creating a space which is comfortable and stylish at the same time; great for families or people who appreciate a curated collection of special finds well-integrated into the design of the loft. The hosts are warm, inviting, lively, discreet, and extremely knowledgeable about the area. The farm is wonderful and Clonmellon is the perfect village to have right nearby. 'Enjoyed a wonderful time over the May Bank Holiday in the hobbit houses. We went with 3 other families and the kids had a ball playing in the central green and fields and toasting marshmallows. Excellent bbq and kitchen facilities which work rain or shine, meant the adults had a fab time catching up too. And the houses themselves are so nicely appointed... We loved that each one had its own theme and enjoyed the great attention to detail Kyra has put in to each one. Such a relaxing, fun getaway, we will definitely be back!'
