The Danish people are the happiest on earth. It's true. It's been measured. And the Danes have a special word that we do not have in English - hygge - it's not a direct translation. It is all about cosiness. Hygge - pronounced 'hoo-gah' - means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. It might be translated as 'snug', but it goes further. It can mean a special cosy, contented mood evoked by comfort and conviviality. The Danish cottages are full of hygge. And I like to think cottages everywhere are a good place to start to find your snug, your hygge and your happiness.
Below you will find many cottages available to stay in as a guest, and many others that inspired me on my travels and I trust will inspire you to explore the world of cottages, small rural places, cabins and huts and slow travel. Bon Voyage!
